Matthew 20:12 (KJV)
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
That thing which offended the workers most was that those who had worked just one hour were made equal to them.
The subject of equality comes up at least twice again in this chapter. Equality is, to this day, a major source of world tension.
- Some people (Communism) seek a world where everyone is equal
- Other people (Capitalism) understand, that kind of equality undermines innovation and productivity
The point of the passage is not that God advocates equality but that God can do as He pleases.
- Ours is to labor.
- Ours is to serve Him when and where He gives us opportunity.
His is to reward us in ways that He chooses. And His reward will always be abundant.
