1 Samuel 17:8 (KJV) This Is Not Comfortable

1 Samuel 17:8 (KJV)
And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
You have to wonder with Goliath why Israel set their army in array but did not fight. I think at least one reason is because what Goliath suggested was so unconventional. Israel expected, even if they weren’t that well trained, to enter conventional combat. They were prepared, though still fearful, to march side by side, each man protecting the next, against the enemy. But how were they to do this?
  • Who picks who fights Goliath?
  • How do you find a close match to him?
People get comfortable doing what they have always done in church. It’s when they are challenged to do what they have never done that they freeze up and refuse to show.
Truth was, Goliath was in the same strait as Israel. When little David came down, Goliath was out of his comfort zone. His armor bearer was useless to him and, though he was in the valley, he was no help to Goliath at all. He couldn’t even keep David from taking Goliath’s sword and decollating his head from his body.
The lesson is this, we don’t need to be in our comfort zone to be victorious. We just need to be in the presence of God.
