The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

One of the commentaries says that the details of this passage bears, “the air of artless truth.” Perhaps we would all do well to be less artful in telling the truth. Sometimes we are so artful with the truth we risk it no longer being truth.
We have three characters:
Mary Magdalene
She was at the grave while it was still dark and the stone was already rolled away. The Bible does not say she looked into the grave but that she knew Jesus was not there.

The younger of the two men, John outran Peter to the grave but stopped short of entering he stooped down to see the empty grave.

Peter
While John outran him, he was first into the sepulcher. Whether it was brashness or boldness is debated by the scholars. I think its just personality. None of us are the same. John did enter the sepulcher so it wasn’t that it was wrong to do. Some of us approach others less aggressively. One is not better than the other. Each has its place and its benefit.

No one need be more like Peter or more like John. We need only be a sanctified version of the person God created us to be.
