Daniel 1:8 (KJV) Purpose, Petition, Prove

Daniel 1:8 (KJV)
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Daniel purposed in his heart
He could not purpose in his flesh. He could not choose to refuse the food. He was not in control. Sometimes, though we have no choice in our flesh, we can choose in our heart. For instance, the bed ridden have no choice whether they can be in the house of God physically. They can choose in their heart that they desire to be there.
Daniel petitioned the prince
In this case the prince is no picture of God, but in our case we may consider that, regardless of our circumstances, we can pray. We aren't in a position to do anything else, and if we are, we ought to do it, but we can pray. No circumstance can stop that.
Daniel proved himself
He asked and received permission to do in the flesh what he desired in the heart to do. The Christian should expect, and welcome proving. If, for instance, we say we wish we could be in church, then we ought to make every effort to be there. Obviously some things are of such a nature that it makes it impossible. Difficult is not impossible. If difficult prevents us then we never really purposed in our heart.
(I beg the reader not to stop at my illustration of church attendance. This could apply to scores of things: Bible study, witnessing, tithing, working, dedication to family – you name it.)
To my readers:
