Genesis 24:49 (KJV) Mine, Or My Master’s?

Genesis 24:49 (KJV)
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
This servant had been sent on a mission of incredible, almost indescribable importance. He was to find a bride for his master’s son. He was to bring her back, sight unseen by either his master or his master’s son, so they could be married. What if neither approved?
  • He was sent away into another country from which to find her
  • He was sent to a far country and
  • He was sent with much wealth and many provisions
It would not have been difficult to have “claimed ownership” of the mission. In many respects, he would have been justified to have asked Laban to “deal kindly” with him. He did not. He asked him to deal kindly with his master.
It’s a matter of attitude, but it is also a theological truth that impacts the performance of our duties before the Lord.
  • Do we see our work as God’s or our own?
  • Do we see fruit as God’s or our own?
  • Do we view the blessings that we receive as belonging to God or to us?
