Ephesians 4:14 (KJV)
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
The focal point of this passage is the matter of deception.
- Immature Christians are easily deceived
- Immature Christians are easily tossed about by strange doctrines and
There are those who “lie in wait” to deceive those so easily deceived.
It would be wise of Christians to beware of those “liers in wait” and to take precautions against them.
- Those who are so easily moved from one church to another.
- Those who are so easily moved from one practice of faith to another.
- Those who can so easily change from a statement of faith to another should take particular care.
They have demonstrated that they are prone to be carried away by “every wind of doctrine.”
In particular we witness in this time whole churches moving away from what they once held tightly.
- The Baptist name
- A stand against modernism
- Conservative preaching regarding standards of music dress and entertainments
- Separation from Protestantism
Those preachers, whether young or older, making changes in these areas would be wise to consider how easy it is for them to be “tossed to and fro.”
The answer to the problem is clearly given in this Scripture. We need to go back to the teachings of those God places in our lives
- Those apostles whose message is found in the Word
- Those prophets who proclaimed that we stand by the old paths
- Those evangelists who reinforced the preaching of our own pastors
- Those pastors who invested year after year in us
- Those teachers who brought us truths from God’s Word
Rely on them. When you are tempted to be tossed and carried away, go back to them. Don’t move forward in a new direction. Move back to the path they set.
