Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.
Verses 17-18 speak of when Israel first comes into the land.
Deuteronomy 25:17-18 (KJV)
Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.
They were to execute the judgment of God upon the Amalekites.
Verse 19 seems to transition from that. It speaks of Israel having rest from their enemies. When God gave them rest, they were to “blot out the remembrance” of Amalek. They were not to forget to blot out the remembrance of Amalek. May I say it something like this, “Don’t forget to forget?”
When we meet the Lord so that,
- we know our sins are forgiven,
- we know that we have access to the throne of grace,
- we know that we have a home prepared in heaven and
- we know that God will deal with our adversaries in His own time and way
We are in a perfect place to remember to forget what those adversaries did to us.
Rest with God puts us in a place where we can forget our enemies. But it is a choice we must make. It is deliberate. It’s an act of obedience. It is a command of God.
Don’t forget to forget.
