And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
I realize I cannot be dogmatic about what I am about to write. There are no doubt times God causes the winds and the storms. But it seems to me that, more often than not, God holds the winds and the storms of life. He does not stop the ebb and flow of the tides, but He does restrain them.
The wind is an ordinary part of nature’s cycles. Even extraordinary wind is an ordinary part. Rain, thunderstorms, lightning earthquakes; these are ordinary, even when they are extraordinarily powerful.
- Jesus calmed the storm and
- Jesus stilled with waves
- The angels held back the four winds of the earth
- The voice of the Lord was not in the storm, the tempest, or the whirlwind.
The typical work of the Lord is not to change the natural order. But He often protects us from it.
I’m not asking the Lord to change the course of the world. I’m asking Him to keep us in His care as we step out to do what He calls for us.
