The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
The Jews believed that this verse, which has no apparent connection with its context, was Moses’ response to the “wide-eyed” stares of the congregation. They had heard both the blessings and the cursings. These things were so above anything they could understand that it was as if Moses said, “Look, don’t burden yourselves with things beyond you. Concern yourselves instead with obeying what God has made plain and with teaching those things to your children.”
Probably too much time is taken up in the exploration of that which we cannot know to the detriment of doing what we do know. Indeed, nowhere near enough effort is put into teaching those things to our children.
One of those references often associated with this passage is Romans 11:33 (KJV)
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable arehis judgments, and his ways past finding out!
Another passage I believe ought to be considered beside it is John 16:12-13 (KJV)
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
It carries the same gist as the Jewish understanding of our passage. Our place is to be fervent with what we understand of the Word of God, be faithful to study all the Word of God, and trust that God’s Holy Spirit knows what we can and cannot bear.
He will teach us what we ought to know when we ought to know it.
