Deuteronomy 31:16 (KJV)
And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
We have come to a place where we would rather hear an optimistic lie than a negative truth. It would not be accurate to say God is cruel, but he is truthful.
God told Moses that Israel would turn to other Gods once he was gone. It must have been a brutal truth to swallow. He had led them and nurtured them for forty years. He had been God’s instrument to deliver them from captivity. He had buried this entire generation’s parents. Having them at the borders of the Promised Land, he must have hoped better for them. It was not to be.
Thinking as a parent might, we have hopes for our children. We long for them to succeed, be happy, and have a good life. This world seldom offers that. Even those whose lives are touched by success experience their share, and more, of troubles.
I don’t think the lesson is, “Get used to it.” I think the lesson is, to set your sights on something else.
- For all that Israel endured,
- For all the sins they committed,
- For all the idolatry they practiced,
this one truth held fast – Jesus Christ came from their blood.
I am not advocating for our children or, as a pastor, our congregation to live in sin and shallow faith. I am saying that the best of us will not be all our spiritual fathers had hoped.
The key is to focus on Christ. The key is to keep looking to and pointing others to Jesus.
