Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
John Gill has some enlightening and blessed observations concerning this passage.
Publish
Meaning to proclaim the name of the Lord. What a calling for the Christian. To preach, to proclaim, to broadcast, to make known to the world the greatness of our God. This is the noblest of efforts.
Name
Connected to the Gospel as can be seen in
Acts 9:15 (KJV)
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
To bear the name of the Lord is to declare the work of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and the good news it gives.
God
Verse four lets us know that this is the Rock – Jesus Christ, “whose work is perfect, and the rock of salvation.”
Verse five speaks of the spots of the lost versus those of the saved.
Deuteronomy 32:5 (KJV)
They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.
Gill writes, “the spots or sins of wicked men are not like theirs; the children of Christ sin through infirmity of the flesh, and the force of temptation, but wicked men through the malignity of their hearts,”
Deuteronomy 32:9-10 (KJV) goes on to say
For the LORD’S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.
He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.
What a blessed song to sing.
- We, who have been saved, are not like the lost in the world
- Our God is not like the gods of the world, and
- Our condition is not like that of the lost in the world
because God found us, led us, washed us, and kept us.
