I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
This Psalm begins with the following superscript, “Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave.”
I’m going on record from the outset that I don’t believe David was complaining about his circumstances. He didn’t lack in faith or doubt God. Rather, he was being inspired by the Spirit of God to express emotions that every human being has or will experience at some point in their life. Most likely, we will encounter these situations multiple times in our lives.
“David was twice in great peril in caves. On one occasion, in the cave of Adullam, when he fled from Achish, the king of Gath, and on another, in the cave of Engedi, where he had sought refuge from the pursuit of Saul.”[1] In both cases, David had men with him who cared for his life. He had men who risked their own lives for his sake. However, it was David who refused to let them confront his enemy, choosing instead to place his trust in the hands of the Lord.
I would like to remind you, as I often need to remind myself, that God has not abandoned us. There are people who genuinely care for our well-being. Perhaps you can’t see them to your right or left due to the blindness caused by stress, or maybe the circumstances have cast a dark shadow over your vision. It’s also possible that they’re not right by your side now. However, God has never left you so utterly alone that there is no one who cares.
Look back to the Lord. David knew that he didn’t need to confront Saul in his own strength. God would handle the situation in His own time, and David would be forever free from the burden of taking matters into his own hands.
Psalms 27:14 (KJV)
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
He will deliver you and you will be happy he did.
