Ezekiel 16:3 (KJV)
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.
This chapter is an intriguing judgment on the city of Jerusalem. I notice, by reading the commentaries, even John Gill, while admitting that Abraham and Sarah were not Canaanites, makes the leap and suggests, he believes Jerusalem must be synonymous with the Jews, saying Abraham and Sarah are “like Canaanites.” I think a better understanding of this chapter is to see it as representative of the city itself.
· Founded by Canaanites, a gruesome people,
· Conquered by God in David’s day,
· Washed and cleaned in the reign of David,
· Adorned with the Temple in Solomon’s day.
The city of Jerusalem was host to the heathen until God chose to set His love upon her and build His faith there.
· Jesus was born just outside Jerusalem, in Bethlehem.
· Jesus was crucified just outside Jerusalem on Calvary.
· Jesus ascended into heaven and will return again just outside Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives.
The destruction of Jerusalem, prophesied in this chapter, has a near and distant fulfillment.
· The first was through Babylon.
· The second was through Rome.
The city has been occupied now by her sisters, the people of Sodom and the people of Samaria - we now call them Palestinians. They are not the ancient people of the land; they are from the heathen lands surrounding her.
But God is not finished with Jerusalem. When Jesus returns, He will establish His throne there and those people who belong to the nations around her will come to worship, love, and serve the One, Jesus, God has set on the throne there.
