One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.
Numbers 15 speaks twice of the same law and the same manner for both the Jews and the strangers in the land.
Numbers 15:15–16
One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD.
One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.
Numbers 15:29–30
Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.
But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously… shall be cut off from among his people.
Here’s the point:
- No variety of religion.
- No variety of rule.
- No variety of culture.
One law—the Bible.
One manner—the practice of it.
We might use the terms faith and practice.
This sounds to me like culture. A few years ago I spent some time working through the concept of culture. One of my preacher friends is working through it right now. We see how culture is critical to our appreciation for and application of faith and practice, but we must be careful not to narrow truth down to a single hobby horse.
In America, Christianity is a subculture—but biblical Christianity is counter-cultural. We desire to influence and create a biblical culture—not to force it upon the unsaved, but to persuade souls of who God is, and that His ways are higher and better.
And we’ve got to practice “one law and one manner” in our churches too. Too often, churches create confusion by allowing variety where God gave clarity. One group bends Scripture to fit culture, while another tries to hold fast to truth. But the Lord’s design is not many conflicting versions of faith—it is one law, one manner.
When churches “of like faith” walk together in unity around the same Book and the same practice, we display the kind of biblical culture God intended. That unity is not found in compromise but in steadfast obedience to God’s Word. The church is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15). To live that out, we must hold to one law and one manner—doctrine and practice that reflect God’s unchanging truth.
One faith. One practice. One truth.
Unchanging, unwavering, and for every generation.
