And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
What depth of humanity we see in our Saviour. Surely He knew why that generation sought a sign. He was aware of the hardness of their hearts—the obstinacy of the Jews in general, and the Pharisees in particular. Still, He was affected by such a lack of spiritual heart on their part.
Matthew Henry expresses it thusly:
“The infidelity of those that have long enjoyed the means of conviction, is a great grief to the Lord Jesus; it troubles him, that sinners should thus stand in their own light, and put a bar in their own door.”
- Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners.
- Jesus died for all men, so that all could be saved.
- Jesus died knowing that vast multitudes—yea, the greatest majority of men—would refuse the salvation He died to provide them.
He died for them anyway.
And He is deeply grieved for all of those who never are saved.
