Psalms 90:8 (KJV) Who Would Not Be Afraid?

Psalms 90:8 (KJV)
Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
Though there is nothing to prove it except the superscript, this is said to be a Psalm written by Moses. That is intriguing to me for a number of reasons. The Psalm is filled with nuggets of truth that are foundational in our faith.
Psalms 90:4-10
For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. This truth makes its way into numerous New Testament texts and is the basis for many ideas concerning end times and some (bad) ideas concerning creation.Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass whichgroweth up.In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.Jesus references this passage, as does I think three of the epistles. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Here is a statistical truth that has transcended centuries.
Psalms 90:12
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
What wisdom rests in these simple words!
Now, in all of that there is this, Psalms 90:8
Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
This is the beginning of wisdom but not the end of it. To fear the Lord is the place to begin a proper relationship with Him. No one can properly love God until He understands the enormous consequences he faces for sin. We hide our ugliness from most folks. Or else, in our current society, we carelessly flaunt it with no regard for others. But God holds every sin in full view.
  • He exposes them to the light that is His own attribute.
  • He lines them up in display, awaiting judgment.
There is no escaping the judgment against sin. There is no negotiation for terms. There is no quarter for mercy. There is only conviction, sentencing and condemnation.
Who would not be afraid?
Only in this fear is there full comprehension of the price of our justification. Only in this fear is there real appreciation for our propitiation. Only in this fear is there full liberty in our relationship as the born again children of God.
He laid all of our sin bare, gave Himself for them and removed them forever.

Psalms 89:3-4 (KJV) Run To The Scriptures

Psalms 89:3-4 (KJV)
I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.
The writer of this Psalm is likely one who began his ministry in the later days of David but lived to see the decline of his kingdom under Rehoboam. In such times of decline it is helpful to reach back to the promises of God. This Psalm takes us back to 2 Samuel 7 and, under the anointing of the Holy Ghost, gives clarity to the promises to David and his seed;
His seed is established forever and His throne to all generations
Vs 3-4
This is fulfilled only in Jesus Christ.
The enemy shall not afflict him
Vs 20-23
This again can only find fulfillment in Jesus.
His seed and throne will endure as the sun
Vs 35-37
Only in Christ can this be fulfilled.
Times of deep affliction can be those times when we search the Scriptures and find clarity and understanding that only makes sense when we need it most. Those times are important times to be in the Scriptures, not to run from them.

1 Corinthians 13:8 (KJV) The Reason Why Charity

1 Corinthians 13:8 (KJV)
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
This chapter focuses on the word charity – a unique form of love that a Christian has toward his church. The main points of the chapter are:
The importance of charity
Vs 1-3
The character of charity
Vs 4-7
The endurance of charity
Vs 8
The maturity of charity
Vs 9-12
The primacy of charity
Vs 13
The reason why charity is the greatest of the three[1]is because it never fails. The reason why it is so important is because it does not give up.
It is childish to quit. It is immature and unchristlike to stop before a thing is finished. None of us are perfect. We see things imperfectly. We do things imperfectly. We will not be perfect until we get to glory.
This one thing we can do right now – never quit.
[1]1 Corinthians 13:8 (KJV)
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Psalms 83:8 (KJV) Support Israel

Psalms 83:8 (KJV)
Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

Psalms 83:4 (KJV)
They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

It seems as if the majority of the world has joined up with the children of Lot to destroy the memory of Israel from I’m off the face of the earth. In my estimation one of the clearest indications of the reality of God is, that nation, that was set apart by Him, has been so hated in the world.

In the Psalmist’s day it was led by the children of Lot, a people related to and in their own land because of Abraham. The fight with Israel is not by those who were dispossessed by Israel, for they live where they do for the same reason Israel lives where they live. This fight is deeper. It is spiritual.

In modern history it has been the Russians, the Egyptians, the Germans, and peoples from all traces of Europe that have taken their place with the children of Lot. Only a handful of nations have been their friends, and most of those not altogether sold out.

This thing seems to me most certain. Only those who support Israel may prosper in the eyes of God.

1 Corinthians 11:33 (KJV) Our Duty

1 Corinthians 11:33 (KJV)
Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
We live in a day when many place no stock in doctrine. Subjects such as baptism and the Lord’s Supper, over which early professors of faith divided, defended and even died, have been relegated to secondary matters over which charity must prevail.[1]
We’ve come to the place that unity is so prized that nothing is considered an essential.
The chapter we consider today is all about authority.
The bulk of the chapter has to do with the Lord’s Supper but the Apostle introduces that topic first with a treatise on the chain of authority beginning at Almighty God. His conclusion is that it is not customary or proper for a Christian to be contentious against authority.
From there the subject of the Lord’s Supper is introduced with a few words about heresy.
I take it that the Apostle would have considered misuse of the Lord’s Supper as both contentious and heretical.
Next comes the bulk of the teaching.
Finally the subject ends with a warning.
To eat the Supper unworthily brings illness and even death upon wayward believers.
And then we are given this conclusion
Wherefore my brethren” on account of the serious nature of the practice of the Lord’s Supper “tarry one for another.” The point isn’t to wait for others to arrive before we begin but to wait on one another. When it comes to the Lord’s Supper we ought to consider it our duty both to serve one another at the table and to serve one another in preparing ourselves spiritually and doctrinally before the table.

Psalms 78:67-68 (KJV) After His Heart and Not After Heritage

Psalms 78:67-68 (KJV)
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
God operates on a level so unlike our own.
We tend to promote and advance people based on past performance. We see a man who has accomplished a thing and then assume his children and children’s children will do the same.
  • It’s the principle behind royal families
  • It’s how money is distributed
  • It is often how we choose our leaders
  • It is very often how military hierarchy is established
The trouble is, we can never really know that a past performance will have any bearing on the future.
God chose much differently. Though Joseph was chosen of God to save Israel in a crisis, opening the door for them to enter Egypt; and though, because of it, two of the twelve tribes come from his loins, his family was not chosen for future greatness in Israel. Joseph was a godly, honorable and faithful man. But time proved his family to be otherwise. The tribes of Ephraim and Manassah aligned with the more rebellious tribes of Israel. The name Ephraim is often used to identify those rebels against the will of God.
Judah, on the other hand, was not such a grand example of godliness. His sin with his daughter in law in Genesis 38 and his complicity with the capture of Joseph you would have thought would have disqualified him from future greatness. But Jacob himself prophesied Judah’s family greatness and God chose out of Judah the family who would reign in Israel.
God chose after His own heart and not after heritage or performance.
We do our best when we seek His heart, not His favor by our works.

Psalms 77:14-15 (KJV) They Were Different Men

Psalms 77:14-15 (KJV)
Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
God’s arm has redeemed …the sons of Jacob and Joseph.
They were different men
With different strengths and weaknesses. God does not call just one type of man but any and all types of men. He pays no attention to race creed color or kinship.
They were of different generations
God’s call to salvation is not merely for one time, but all of time. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever. His plan has not changed. His power has not changed. His love for souls has not changed.
They were chosen separately
But both were chosen. Anyone who has a heart for Christ may fairly know that Christ has a heart for them. God’s call for Jacob was much different that the one he had for Joseph but He had a call for each. God has a call for each of us if we will but accept it and embrace it.

Psalms 74:1-2 (KJV) Meaning, Purpose and Relevance

Psalms 74:1-2 (KJV)
Maschil of Asaph.
O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Of this Asaph the ISBE[1] says, “the name of three men in the Old Testament, of whom one is the reputed author of Psalms 50 and 73 through 83. He was one of David’s three chief musicians, the other two being Heman, and Ethan or Jeduthun, and we first hear of him when the ark was taken to Jerusalem.”
I have no question that this Psalm was written in the days of King David and perhaps even was written by David and given to Asaph. The terminology used of the Shepherd and of Zion lean strongly towards it.
John Gill writes, “Some think that Asaph, the penman of this psalm, was not the same that lived in the times of David, but some other of the same name, a descendant of his, that lived after the Babylonish captivity, since the psalm treats of things that were done at the time the Jews were carried captive into Babylon, or after; but this hinders not that it might be the same man; for why might he not, under a spirit of prophecy, speak of the sufferings of the church in later ages, as well as David and others testify before hand of the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow?”
Much of what David and others wrote was prophetic of times they would never live to see. Just so, why should we not believe that, under the spirit of prophecy, the message of the Bible would have relevance to our lives just now?
David, Asaph and others of their day had no way to know of the Babylonian captivity. Yet so much of what they wrote was relevant for that day. Even so, all of what they wrote has meaning, purpose and relevance right now.

1 Corinthians 8:8 (KJV) When Liberty Kills

1 Corinthians 8:8 (KJV)
But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
If it is appropriate to liken the eating of meat to our standards of personal separation, and I believe it is, then what we see here is that these standards of separation have little bearing on our relationship with God. So far as God is concerned, the one who ate the meat was neither better nor worse than the one who did not. The one who did not eat the meat was neither better nor worse than the one who did not. The issue of standards is not between the believer and God at all.
The verses following clearly teach that the issue, a serious one, is between the believer and others, especially others believers.
1 Corinthians 8:9-11
But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
The key to the passage is in verse eleven, “the weak brother perish.” That it speaks of a believer is apparent in the word “brother.” The word perish does not mean, in this case, go to hell or perhaps even die. It means his own spiritual walk is killed. He becomes discouraged, disheartened. This one who had such potential for bearing fruit for God becomes stunted, barren and spiritually lifeless.
Consider your own history as a Christian. Have you not seen one who seemed so on fire for God get swept away into worldliness and a less useful Christian service because someone convinced them they were good enough without being sold out for Christ? I have watched people who were once faithful and involved in the ministry make friendships with others less faithful and involved and they then grow less faithful and involved. They did not stop being Christians. They did not lose their salvation. But they did die to their once enthusiastic service to the Lord.
Take heed that your own sense of liberty doesn’t kill someone else’s sense of sacrificial service to Jesus.

1 Corinthians 7:1-2 (KJV) An Alternative to an Alternative Lifestyle

1 Corinthians 7:1-2 (KJV)
Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
Our culture puts such an emphasis on marriage that a person is thought of as strange if they do not marry within a few years of adulthood. It seems to me that the Apostle Paul, in this chapter, taught about the opposite. Over and over again he references that the best would be to stay single and dedicated to God. He does not forbid marriage. I would even say he recognizes that the majority both of men and women ought to be married. He uses marriage as a picture of the relationship of Christ and the church. It is certainly not sinful or wrong to be married. It can be a pattern of what heaven will be like. One the other hand, he does present this alternative; singleness devoted to the Lord. This chapter then is filled with instructions on how to address the challenges of marriage. If one must marry he or she must understand that there will be difficulties associated with it.
Our world has elevated the married life to the point where they have to make new and evolving perverted norms concerning this relationship. People, who should never have gotten married, find they can’t stand their spouse so divorce laws had to be loosened to let them break free. But we are so pushed toward marriage that new norms had to be created for remarriage. This hasn’t worked out so well so many decided to live as if they were married, only without the formality of legal marriage. New norms and levels of acceptance have come to bear on this practice. Of course, some still can’t bear the extended companionship of a heterosexual relationship so they assumed they must be attracted to homosexual relationships instead. Pressure has been so great that our society is beginning to write new rules of culture allowing that homosexual relationships be granted the same legal rights as traditional marriage. This has then opened up doors to even more possibilities of perverse relationships. These relationships have not been any more satisfying for the participants than traditional marriage and the problems have compounded. Much of this could be avoided if our society only presented and offered acceptance of the Pauline possibility-that of a life dedicated solely to God.
I understand the aversion to it. It smacks of Roman Catholicism, its forbidding of marriage to its priests and nuns (and the terrible abuses that have arisen from it). I am not speaking of forbidding anybody from marriage. I am only advocating for the possibility that a person’s calling in this life might be one without the burdens associated with marriage. You might ask, “What about the blessings of marriage such a person would miss out on?” First, if those blessings are such that they can’t do without them, they are absolutely free to marry. Second, God is more than capable of replacing those blessings with others far greater.
This gets us to the root of the trouble. We don’t believe God. The reason our world would not teach this alternative lifestyle is because they don’t believe God. (I said believe and not believe in because I am convinced every human believes in god of some sort, they just don’t believe God as He has revealed Himself in the Word of God.) This trouble extends into Christianity where we tend to believe God only so far as we are comfortable.
If we thoroughly believed God we would be open to the possibility of a life solely dedicated to God.

1 Corinthians 6:15-20 (KJV) Know Ye Not?

1 Corinthians 6:15-20 (KJV)
Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
This chapter contains four “Know ye not” statements, things the Word of God assumes a Christian ought to know:
That we shall judge angels
Vs 3
That the unrighteousness shall not inherit the kingdom of God
Vs 9
That our bodies are the members of Christ
Vs 15
That our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost
Vs 19
Note the difference between bodies in vs 15 and body in vs 19.
The individual bodies of each Christian compose the members of the body of Christ and the body of Christ, the whole local church and not the individual member, is the temple of the Holy Ghost. No doubt we ought to glorify God as individual believers. The scriptural way to do that, according to this passage, is in participation with our church. As we perform as members of the body of Christ God places is in, we bring glory to God.
A believer who forsakes or neglects his church denies glory to God through disunity to that which Christ loved and gave himself for.

Psalms 67:1-2 (KJV) Anointing, Power and Effectiveness

Psalms 67:1-2 (KJV)
To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song.
God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah. That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.
This passage catches the attention immediately, and for a number of reasons:
  • It is the first verse of the Psalm
  • It is reminiscent of Moses’ prayer
  • It is what we all hope for
I noted in my visit with God this morning the reason the Psalmist desired it. His heart was toward God and not self. He didn’t desire blessing so that he would be eased and in comfort. He desired a blessing that God would be more magnified in the earth. His prayer for blessing was not a prayer for wealth, health or peace.
His was a prayer for anointing, power and effectiveness in spreading the Word of God.

To my readers:
First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.
