Psalms 150:1 (KJV) Praise Ye The Lord

Psalms 146:1 (KJV)
Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

Psalms 147:1 (KJV)
Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.

Psalms 148:1 (KJV)
Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.

Psalms 149:1 (KJV)
Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.

Psalms 150:1 (KJV)
Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

The final five Psalms all focus on praising the Lord. If it was to be considered a complete work (it isn’t really because it is part of the whole body called our Bible) we could conclude that, after everything else is said and done, just praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord oh my soul
Tell your soul to praise the Lord. Even when it is unnatural and difficult, praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord for it is good
There are some responses that are not good. Praising the Lord is always appropriate.

Praise the Lord from the heavens
Focus attention on God In your best days as well as the worst.

Praise the Lord in song
It is the only appropriate use of music.

Praise the Lord in His sanctuary
Don’t forsake the house of God. Be there to praise the Lord.

Psalms 147:10-11 (KJV) What Pleases God

Psalms 147:10-11 (KJV)
He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.
The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

The battle between the flesh and the Spirit is so real that it is difficult to reconcile passages such as this with what we know to be true, what we know must be true; that God blesses ingenuity, hard work, and industry. All who are on the ball believe Ben Franklin’s, “Early to bed, early to rise makes one healthy wealthy and wise.”

I do not advocate for laziness and slothfulness. I do not advocate for sleeping in and refusing to work. I am sure we ought to give and do our best. But the fact is doing our best is easily morphed into trusting our work.

God help us fight the flesh, fear the Lord, and hope in His mercy.

Revelation 10:11 (KJV) Preach Again

Revelation 10:11 (KJV)
And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

The word I am keying in upon is, “again”. “Thou must prophesy, [preach, proclaim the Word of God] again.”

He had just digested a piece of Scripture.
It was sweet to his taste but bitter in his belly. I know the feeling. I love the Word of God. I love

reading it, studying it, coming to understand it a little bit more and a little bit better. I love dedicating time, attention, and focus on the Bible. I love the quiet time with God and His Word.

But I realize that this is not my only duty.
I must preach it again and again. I must be among people, many of them. I must declare the Word to those who hear but never heed. I must preach it, when I am able, to those who hate to hear the Word of God. I must preach it to those I love and know have not trusted Christ as Saviour. I must preach it again and again even though, as I do so, many of them reject the message, and the God I love.

Wow, I am thankful for those who support the preaching of the Word of God.
I am thankful for those who express love for me and those who back me in preaching. I could and would do this if only God was pleased. But it is sure more pleasant when at least a few others come along.

First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.

Psalms 142:5 (KJV) Our Refuge and Portion

Psalms 142:5 (KJV)

I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

The superscript says this is a prayer of David when he was in the cave. While I am not sure there is any evidence for that, it is for sure that the experience was a desperate one. This Psalm is filled with desperation.

In the midst of such turmoil, the Psalm has this one ray of hopefulness and light, “Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.”

Whatever else is real in our lives, this thing is real. In this life, God is our refuge and He is our portion. There is nothing else promised in the land of the living. It is all fleeting, temporal, and will, at the last, be taken from us. Money, houses, health, and name; it all vaporizes at death or soon after. These two things are eternal

·       God is our refuge

·       God is our portion

If you do not know Him, He invites you to come to Him.

If you are one of His children, latch hold of these promises. They will see you through your own dark cave.

Revelation 8:1 (KJV) Silence

Revelation 8:1 (KJV)
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

Today is the Fourth of July, Independence Day here in the US. Our heavens will not be silent tonight. Indeed, they have not been for many nights lately. My neighbor has a tradition of getting out of town to camp over the Fourth. She isn’t celebrating, she is escaping. The noise in the heavens is too much for her. Others express the same frustration. They are thankful for our country, but they think these celebrations with fireworks are too much.

Perhaps they are.

John Adams said that the day should be celebrated this way. It’s about the only monument that bears his name. I am not quick to give it up.

But I notice the silence in heaven.

There is something to be said for absolute silence. It is a healthy thing especially in our busy world today, to be set aside some time to be still and know that God is God.

I understand that this passage isn’t a command, but it could be a prescription. I recommend believers everywhere have about half an hour, thirty minutes per day, of silence.

To my readers:
First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.

Psalms 138:7-8 (KJV) The Lord Will Perfect

Psalms 138:7-8 (KJV)
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.
The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

The Lord will perfect….
That means He will make changes. He will put us through things that make us different and that remove from us our imperfections.

Three promises the Psalmist clings to:
Thou wilt revive me
Breathe new life into me. Feed my soul and spirit so that I am strong enough to keep on.

Thou shalt stretch forth thine hand
“Against the wrath of mine enemies”. This is interesting. God’s hand will be against their wrath but not against them. God is for every soul. He loves everyone and wills that they repent and be saved. He acts against that which is wicked and contrary to His righteousness.

Thy right hand shall save me
Salvation is rescue first from death and hell. It is also rescue from the destruction this world may do to the child of God.

Through all of this God perfects that which concerns us.

Psalms 136:1-3 (KJV) Strength Through Trouble

Psalms 136:1-3 (KJV)
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

There are twenty-six verses in this Psalm. Every one of the ends with the phrase, “for his mercy endureth forever.”

Consider carefully and you will notice that those statements preceding the phrase outline a history filled with trouble, trial, and tribulations. God was merciful to them in the midst of these troubles. He brought them through them. He delivered them out of them, but he did not keep them from them.

I get the impression that the Psalmist was preaching to his own soul. Perhaps he was in a period of trouble, trial, and tribulation himself. Perhaps he rehearsed the mercies of God again and again in an effort to bolster his own heart and find the mercy to make it through his difficulties.

I know this Psalm has the ability to have that effect.

Psalms 134:2 (KJV) When the World Sleeps

Psalms 134:2 (KJV)
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.

This particular Psalm is addressed specifically to those whose ministry was the worship of the Lord in the night watches. Barnes says of this passage, “There is something favorable to devotion in the silence of the night; when the world sleeps; when we are alone with God.”

We have services:

  • In the morning,
  • Past noon, and then
  • Two nights of the week.

We also hold our revival preaching meetings and special conference services at night.

There is something favorable when believers assemble while the rest of the world relaxes in fleshly rest.

The Sunday morning services are always a blessing.

Particularly blessed are those who are faithful to the scheduled evening services.

To my readers:
First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.
