Joshua 10:21 (KJV) Peace

Joshua 10:21 (KJV)
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
When our Civil War had finally ended the victory secured by the Union reunited the states, but it did not stop the tongues of many in the South. It could be argued that they are moving their tongues to this day. But in the case of Joshua’s battle, in chapter ten, the enemy of Israel was so soundly defeated that, by the time it was over, no one of them said a word against Israel. They had certainly sworn and cursed them prior to the battle. Now those remaining returned into fenced cities in peace and at peace in their soul.
We live in a time of great cursing against the Lord and His people. A time such as existed when the cup of Canaan’s iniquity was full appears to exist once again. I do not imagine it is possible for us to so soundly defeat the enemies of our Lord, either by word, testimony or action, as to stop their tongues. But the Bible promises another Joshua will soon arrive. When His battle is over, none will move their tongues against any of the children of God forevermore.

Joshua 9:8 (KJV) Coming Short

Joshua 9:8 (KJV)
And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

The people of Gibeon remind me of the majority of people in churches today. While the people of God are a minority in the world, and the majority unite in opposition to God, there is this other contingent of people who, instead of being born again, make a league with the church. They never become brethren; they only agree that they will be servants in the house of God. Refusing to surrender, and die to self, they prefer to work out their own salvation in good works.

Their plan will always leave them short of the glory of God.

Joshua 8:9 (KJV) Lodging Among The People

Joshua 8:9 (KJV)
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

The wording suggests that Joshua did not always lodge among the people. Responsibilities, personal care, and even spiritual development required that this was not a normal thing or even a regular thing. It was, however, a significant thing when it happened.

Israel had just taken a good licking. That had been defeated at Ai and it was, as much as anyone, Joshua’s fault. By this time, he had heard from the Lord and corrected the issue. Ai must be confronted again. It was appropriate, inspirational and encouraging for Joshua to lodge with his men on this night.

The man of God must preach, and I would suggest live, not as pleasing men but God. That being the case, when he does make his dwelling among the people, they may note it and take heart.

Joshua 7:10 (KJV) Get Up!

Joshua 7:10 (KJV)
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

Joshua thought he had good reason to be concerned, upset, prostrate before the Lord;
  • They had lost a battle
  • They had men who died
  • They had families grieving

It never occurred to him that they might suffer losses.
  • What would Israel say about him?
  • What would the Canaanites say about Israel?

In a manner that would not be well-received today, God told Joshua to get up. He was to take responsibility for his situation.
  • They had rushed into Ai too quickly
  • They had rushed into Ai too confidently
  • They had rushed into Ai without prayer
  • They had rushed into Ai without purity

God urges us to come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. We are not supposed to remain there. There is a time to get up, wipe away the tears, take charge of our emotions, find courage in the truth and move forward.

Joshua 5:1 (KJV) Our God is Awesome

Joshua 5:1 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
One must wonder how it is that the Amorites and the Canaanites, whose heart melted, and spirit withered at the news of God’s supernatural intervention on behalf of Israel at the Jordan River, would still pitch the fight they did against Israel. I surmise that it must have been because, refusing to surrender to the God of Israel, they had no recourse but to fight.
I am reminded of the Philistines when Eli’s sons brought the ark of God to the battlefield.[1]
I also think of the Pharisees when confronted with the work of Jesus.[2]
This offers a clue into the life of any child of God. We suffer sometimes precisely because we have the hand of God upon us. The hand of God offers victory, but in this world, it also incites the enemy. A committed soldier does not shrink because the battle looks hopeless. Contrarily, he doubles down to the fight. Satan’s own are nothing if they are not committed.
Hold on child of God. The enemy is terrible, but our God is awesome.

Revelation 18:16-17 (KJV) Riches Come To Nothing

Revelation 18:16-17 (KJV)
And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
I feel like I must constantly remind those, who could read these daily visits, that everything in the Revelation of Jesus Christ is future and will have a literal fulfillment. That being said, men are the same in every age. We haven’t changed much from the days recorded in the Old Testament and, so far as human nature is concerned, not much will have changed in the time of the Great Tribulation. I can, therefore, learn from those parallels’ lessons helpful to life today and now.
What I notice is how quickly riches come to nothing. In one hour, in barely a moment’s notice, everything these people had placed their stock, their livelihoods and their self-worth had come to naught.
Matthew 6:19-21
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Joshua 1:2 (KJV) Moses to Joshua

Joshua 1:2 (KJV)
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
In so many respects the transition from Moses to Joshua is typical of that from the Old Testament law to New Testament grace.
Moses died
As great a man as he was, even he fell short of the Promised Land. We can never be good enough to merit the favor and the blessings of God. If we live of the law, so shall we die; of the law and short of the glory of God.
Joshua was merely a servant
Unlike Moses, Joshua was not raised in a palace and never received the education of kings. Joshua had not the huge life changing experiences of:
  • Being driven from Egypt,
  • Witnessing the burning bush or
  • Speaking to God face to face
as Moses did. He was simply a servant. While Moses was on the hill lifting his hands to God, Joshua was in the trenches, doing battle with the enemy. Joshua is nobody made somebody by grace.
Schofield says Moses is the first step of redemption, the coming out of the world and Joshua is the second step, the coming into God’s promise. Both are necessary parts of redemption.
Canaan isn’t a type of heaven for there was conflict there. It is a type of spiritual victory. May God grant us each the grace to be victors.

Deuteronomy 34:1-3 (KJV) Not Yet

Deuteronomy 34:1-3 (KJV)
And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,
And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,
And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.
It is interesting to me that God showed Moses what was not yet. He didn’t just show him the Promised Land, He showed him which tribes received which lots of land. I picture this conversation between God and Moses, God pointing out the borders of the land of Gilead, the land of Dan the land of Naphtali, Ephraim, Manasseh, and Judah. Though the land God intended for the other tribes is not specifically recorded in this passage, the tenor of the passage suggests to me that God likely showed them to Moses too.
I am reminded of when we built our house. We purchased the land, selected and building plan and chose the spot on that land we would place the house. At one point we came with the children and the builder and walked the property, pointing out where the kitchen, the living room the bedrooms and even where the driveway would be. Because we had the plans, we could predict what would be.
God had the plans so He was able to show this man Moses, who would never enter there himself, just what would be.
Every time we open the Bible God does the same for us. He points out things that are not yet but one day will be. In some cases, we will not see them in the flesh. We, just as Moses did, will die before the thing comes to pass. That makes it no less a reality nor less a blessing to the believer.
