Psalms 132:7 (KJV) The Heart for Worship

Psalms 132:1-5 (KJV)
A Song of degrees.
LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions:
How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;
Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

For some time, Israel had been without a place of worship. The leadership of the nation had let slip the most important feature of the people of God. When David ascended to the throne, it became his passion to restore this worship.

  • He erred at first
  • He faced huge opposition
  • He was held back from finishing the work

God gave it to His son, Solomon, to be the one who built the temple.

Still the passion was there. And it spread.

Psalms 132:6 (KJV)
Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.

The heart for worship, unnoticed for decades, was revived until the people of the land sang out,

Psalms 132:7 (KJV)
We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.

Lord, make it so once again!

Psalms 129:8 (KJV) The Blessing of the LORD

Psalms 129:8 (KJV)
Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.

There are at least two ways to understand this passage:

First, “they which go by” might be those that had afflicted this Psalmist from his youth.
They would not necessarily have to be the same individuals but rather a type of person. Those who follow the Lord often find that those who do not are aggressive and seem to have the upper hand. In the end, that is not true. They do not have the upper hand. They merely have the friendship of this world.

Second, “they which go by” might be other Jews, people just like the Psalmist, passing him during day by day events.
In this case, the tenor sounds to me like, because of affliction, the average person is unhappy, depressed. He doesn’t have joy enough to share a blessing with his brethren.

Either way, the implication is that the Psalmist observed, lamented, and even suffered from the absence of this common blessing.

May we never be so down that we do not offer a prayer of blessing upon those we meet along the way.

Psalms 127:2 (KJV) The Vanity of Worry

Psalms 127:2 (KJV)
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

This is called, “A psalm of degrees for Solomon”. Interesting, since Ecclesiastes, written by Solomon, is all about vanity.

I know this verse is not intended to excuse laziness. We are to redeem the time. On the other hand, this verse does teach the absurdity, the vanity, of worry. God’s got this. Just be faithful and trust Him. It also teaches the fallacy of “10% inspiration and 90% perspiration”. While I have no doubt many a ministry has been built on that model, I am convinced what stands is but wood, hay, and stubble. It will, in the end, all be for naught.

  • Be faithful.
  • Be on time.
  • Be in place all the time.

Then leave the concern to the Lord.

He gives His beloved sleep.

Psalms 125:2 (KJV) Put To Pen

Psalms 125:2 (KJV)
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.

Years ago, I was a contributing writer for the Call to Glory devotional booklet. I enjoyed writing those 250 or so word pieces and did most of mine from illustrations and incidents that happened to or around me. I attempted to find spiritual lessons in day to day events.

This verse is a biblical example of this same concept. The Bible is filled with spiritual lessons drawn from life happenings. The Psalmist must have looked at those mountains round about Jerusalem every day of his life. Who knows how many times he had considered how those mountains reminded him that God surrounds, protects, provides, and fellowships with his children?

There came a day when the Holy Spirit led him to put that thought to pen.

We will not write new scripture. But we might be a blessing to other believers or even to our future family if we put to pen the spiritual thoughts we gain from life.

Psalms 123:2 (KJV) Eyes On God

Psalms 123:2 (KJV)
Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

I am at our annual church camp out today. The occasion means that my dogs go on many walks on a leash. That’s not something that happens a lot at home. As we walk around the park, both dogs keep a watchful eye on me. Of course, they each have a will of their own and they pull the leash if I allow them. But they know I also have a plan so, as we walk, they keep an almost constant eye on me.

  • How fast am I walking?
  • How pleasing is my facial expression?
  • Which direction am I turning?
  • What instructions am I giving?

They have a will, but they know, especially with the leash, I am in control.

Now we should always have our eyes on the Lord. But these are unique days. It would not be wrong to think of the circumstances of the Chinese Covid-19 and the surrounding governmental edicts, as a sort of leash. We, in the United States, are tethered more than we have been in centuries. The government thinks it is in control. We who are Christians know better.

These are good days to keep our eyes upon the Lord, “until that He have mercy upon us.”

Psalms 121:2-3 (KJV) Assurance, Comfort and Counsel

Psalms 121:2-3 (KJV)
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

There is a shift here from the first person to the second person. The penman must need help. What man doesn’t? He has sought that help from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Having received his help, he then turns his attention to the second person and begins to provide assurance, comfort, and counsel.

  • No man is capable of being a help unless he has received help from God.
  • No man, having received that help, is right with God and others unless he tries to pass it on.

Psalms 119:176 (KJV) We Need God

Psalms 119:176 (KJV)
I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

What an interesting way to end such a major work as Psalms 119. His final conclusion was that he had gone astray and that he needed God to seek him. He had not forgotten God’s commandments. In fact, it was those commandments that had led him to conclude such a thing.

I am reminded of Apostle Paul when he said he had not attained.

The more we grow close to the Lord the more we know we need the Lord. It is a humanistic Christianity that believes we can affect any good on our own. We need God even as:

  • We learn His Word,
  • We obey His Word.
  • We teach His Word.

In the end, we need God to seek us.

Psalms 119:164 (KJV) The Judgments of God

Psalms 119:164 (KJV)
Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.

Nowhere can we find in the Bible a definitive command concerning the number of times a person ought to offer prayers, worship, or devotion to the Lord. David prayed morning, noon, and night. Daniel prayed three times each day. One the other hand we are told by the Apostle to pray without ceasing.

Since the number seven is often called the number of completion or perfection it seems most appropriate to me to think the principle of our Psalm is that we praise the Lord, render worship to Him, and bring our prayers to Him as often “as he shall find it desirable and convenient; as his feelings or his circumstances shall suggest.”[1]

The purpose of this praise is defined as, “because of thy righteous judgments.” If this is the case, we can never run short of reasons for praise.

  • God’s wisdom in His eternal plan
  • God’s determination in the way of salvation
  • God’s patience in handling sinners
  • God’s oversight in the affairs of man
  • God’s use of the fallen to bring about growth in the redeemed

I could go on. The judgments of God are righteous, wise, good, kind, and loving.
