Philippians 4:2 (KJV) No Reason To Be At Odds

Philippians 4:2 (KJV)
I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.
Verse two serves to demonstrate the cohesion of the entire book of Philippians and reminds us not to read passages of the Bible in a fashion that isolates any passage from the whole. This verse draws is back to Philippians 2:5
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.
It is as if the Word of God had been addressing the manner of, and reasons for letting the mind of Christ be in us when, after fully covering the subject, a direct appeal to two persons specifically is made.
In what is the nearest hint at a problem in the church at Philippi, two members of the church Euodias and Syntyche are called out and implored to “be of the same mind in the Lord.“
  • It may have been a problem those two struggled with.
  • It is more so a problem people struggle with today.
But we have ample and good reasons to be of the same mind. We have examples and we have the help of the Holy Spirit.
There is no reason for members of the same church to be at odds in issues of faith and practice.

Jeremiah 35:18-19 (KJV) Don’t Throw Instruction to the Wind

Jeremiah 35:18-19 (KJV)
And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
The Rechabites obeyed because they obeyed.
  • They weren’t forced to obey.
  • They did not live in conditions where they could not but obey
They had means and opportunity to disobey and yet they didn’t.
Such character is lacking among so many. It was lacking in Israel in that day and lacking among Americans in our day.
Notice that they didn’t require some “Eleventh Commandment” in order to obey. It did not require “chapter and verse” (although such passages exist) to keep them from drinking alcohol, they didn’t drink wine because their fathers had taught them not to.
Now God promised that, despite the upheaval Israel was about to experience, “Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me…” There is, of course, a supernatural answer to this promise but there is also a practical one; those who obey what they are taught will obviously be those who survive catastrophes much more frequently than those who throw instruction to the wind.

Philippians 3:3 (KJV) The True Circumcision

Philippians 3:3 (KJV)
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
The Word of God makes this very clear distinction between those who are the circumcision (the separated and belonging to God) and those who are not.
  • The one places confidence in the flesh, the human ability to perform
  • The other does not.
There are at least three areas where the wisest of souls understand they must not put confidence in the flesh:
In the area of salvationThis is the primary subject of the text. The Jews believed they were the people of God because of their own deeds. Circumcision itself was an act of the flesh. How ironic that they trusted the flesh through the act of cutting away that flesh.
Salvation is never earned by some fleshly act, even a well-intentioned and sacrificial one. It is only accomplished by faith in the work of Christ and the promise of God.
In the area of accountabilityThe Christian, who is discerning, learns early that he is incapable to make right choices and sound spiritual decisions on his own.
  • He needs the Holy Spirit.
  • He needs the Word of God.
  • He needs his church to provoke and push him in the right way.
In the area of their childrenAs they grow, we want to trust our children. Love for them often blinds us to the weaknesses of their flesh and a degree, I think, of laziness lulls us too often to put misplace confidence in them.
Godly parents work hard at:
  • Watching their children,
  • Supervising their activities and
  • Guiding their relationships
when done early, consistently and lovingly children appreciate this guidance.
Those cut away from this world and dedicated to the Lord put no confidence in the flesh but lean on the Spirit and those gifts God has given to lead us in the godly walk.

Philippians 2:4 (KJV) An Interest in Others

Philippians 2:4 (KJV)
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Barnes Notes has some very good stuff with regard to this verse. I will use it without much comment.
My version will be highly abbreviated.
“Do not let your care and attention be wholly absorbed by your own concerns, or by the concerns of your own family. Evince a tender interest for the happiness of the whole, and let the welfare of others lie near your hearts. This, of course, does not mean that there is to be any improper interference….
  • We are not to be “busybodies” in the concerns of others
  • We are not to obtrude our advice where it is not sought
  • We are not to find fault with what pertains exclusively to him.
  • We are not to be gossips about the concerns of others.
Where Christian duty and kindness require us to look into the concerns of others, there should be utmost delicacy.
However,
  • We are to feel that the spiritual interests of everyone in the church is, in a certain sense, our own interest.
  • There are circumstances where it is proper to look with special interest on the temporal concerns of others.
  • we should seek the welfare of all others in a spiritual sense.”
Barnes’ commentary is much more detailed. This gives a good sense of what he meant to convey.

Philippians 1:17 (KJV) Defending the Gospel

Philippians 1:17 (KJV)
But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
Paul, the Bible says, was “set for the defense” of the gospel.  There were at least three ways I know he defended the gospel:
In his preaching of itWhen Paul got saved he immediately dedicated his life to tell others about the gospel.  The most powerful means of witnessing is to passionately tell your own story of what the gospel means to you.
In his suffering for itThe Word set means “appointed.” It come from a term that means “to lie outstretched.” It is the idea of being totally exposed and vulnerable. Sacrifice everything for the gospel.
In his death because of itPaul believed he might be released from his prison cell but even if he wasn’t, and we know he wasn’t, in giving his life He defended the truth of the gospel as surely as the soldier who dies on the field did not do in vain. His death defended his country.

Ephesians 6:14 (KJV) The Original Minute Men

Ephesians 6:14 (KJV)
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Especially was it true in Ancient Greece that the threat of an advancing army was ever present. For an Ancient Greek community the question of an attack was not if but when. Most often that attack would be by another Greek community. Land was how they survived and prospered and the way to get land was to take it.
Every Greek male was expected to stand when the time came to stand and march when the plans was to advance themselves. He was the original “Minute man” ready to leave his fields and do battle when called for. In exchange, this male was given the privilege of voice. He had a vote in his community’s civil matters
Christians too know that their enemy is ever present. It isn’t if he will attack the house of God, which is the church, it is when.
  • Every Christian within the church is the glue that holds that church together.
  • Every Christian has input into the direction the church will take.
  • Every Christian therefore has a responsibility to stand when the enemy advances and to march when his or her church advances on the enemy.

Ephesians 5:15 (KJV) The Foolish and The Wise

Ephesians 5:15 (KJV)
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
We have here a definition of the wise walk and the foolish walk, all wrapped up in one word, circumspectly.
The word means “carefully, diligently and with an eye all around; on guard for temptations wherever they may appear.”
  • The foolish are not careful
  • The wise are
John Gill writes of this passage,
“such walk like fools,
  • whose eyes are not upon their ways;
  • who walk in their own ways, which are crooked, and ways of darkness, and lead to destruction;
  • who walk after the flesh, and naked, without the garments of a holy life and conversation; and with lamps, but no oil in them:
and such walk as wise men, who
  • walk according to the rule of God’s word,
  • make Christ their pattern,
  • have the Spirit for their guide, and
walk as becomes the Gospel of Christ; inoffensively to all men,
  • in wisdom towards them that are without, and
  • in love to them that are within; and
  • as pilgrims and strangers in this world, looking for a better country; and
  • so as to promote the glory of God, and the good of souls.

Ephesians 4:16 (KJV) Every Member is Important

Ephesians 4:16 (KJV)
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Unity in the church is the effect of every member’s participation. This verse phrases it, “that which every joint supplieth.”
The importance of every member of the church just can’t be overstated. It is true that some members will be:
  • more active
  • more visible and
  • more acknowledged
It is not true that any one member is more important than another.
That’s why one of the tasks of those in the ministry is to perfect and mature every member. The preacher must make himself aware of each and every one that he might:
  • Pray for them
  • Encourage them and
  • Build them up in the Lord.
It is easy to focus on those who insist on more attention or to focus on those who are the busiest and most reliable. That’s a mistake. The most reliable servers probably should get the lion’s share of the preacher’s attention but they should certainly not get all of it.
And those who demand attention? They are a drain on the unity, not a part of it.

Jeremiah 31:7 (KJV) Pause and Consider

Jeremiah 31:7 (KJV)
For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
Every word of God is profitable and ought to be heard and heeded. Every word of God is in fact, “Thus saith the Lord.” But here we have a passage[1] that specifically declares “thus saith the Lord.” It is worth our while to pause and consider it.
Sing with gladnessThis was preached in a time of great trouble but singing and gladness were called for. Few things will get you through hard times better than finding reasons to rejoice.
For JacobThe trouble was directed toward them yet God said be glad for them. They are the people of God and He is at work in them. That’s a reason to rejoice.
ShoutThere is no good reason to keep our faith quiet. We are not only to be loud about it when we are with believers but also and even especially when we are out among the nations.
Publish yeMake it known. Not merely through preachers and missionaries you support but personally.
Praise yeMake your own confidence and faith in God be known .
Say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.Pray for the salvation of those who are not.

Ephesians 2:15 (KJV) Make More of the Church

Ephesians 2:15 (KJV)
Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
This appears to me to hearken back to Genesis 2:24 and ties this passage to Ephesians chapter five. Just as marriage takes two people with:
  • Different family blood
  • Different cultural backgrounds and interests
  • Different traditions
  • Different tastes and dislikes
and makes the two, one flesh, so does the church with Jews and Gentiles.
  • The one was nigh unto God, the other far off
  • The one was steeped in godly traditions, the other in worldly ones
  • The one was the family of the Messiah, the other was ignorant of His promise
The years of difference had driven such a wedge between the two that the enmity was thick and impenetrable.
Christ reconciled the two, not by compromising the one with the other, but by making from the two one new man.
That new man resides within the church. We must never make light of it. We must always draw more to it.

Ephesians 1:23 (KJV) The Fulness of Christ

Ephesians 1:23 (KJV)
Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
Too little focus is placed these days on the church. It is considered secondary to what is supposed to be the invisible, universal church/body. It is thought to be imperfect and therefore not necessary. It is considered by some to be corrupt and in that case to be rejected.
As to the invisible universal conceptI contend that so such thing exists in the Bible. It is a relic derived from Catholicism. It is conjured up in Bible studies bent on Protestant presupposition.
As to the charge that not church is perfectI agree. Churches are composed of sinful human beings. Though we are saved we are not without sin. But the church itself is a perfect answer for imperfect saints. It is a place, given to us of the Lord, to aide us in God’s plan to conform us into Christ’s image.
As to the charge that churches are corruptThat is not a fair assessment. Of course there are corrupt churches. There are entire denominations that are corrupt. Satan has created Christian denominations for the very purpose of corrupting Christianity. That does not mean that every church is corrupt. Find one that is not.
God puts so much emphasis on the church that He calls it “thefulness of him that filleth all in all.“
Christ is the fullness of God and the church is the fullness of Christ.

Galatians 6:3 (KJV) Nothing Without Christ

Galatians 6:3 (KJV)
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
But could he think himself something if he is something? Many people are considered to be something in this world:
  • Some are wealthy
  • Some are famous
  • Some are leaders
  • Some are courageous
Do they get to think something of themselves? The verse is not suggesting such a thing but declaring that men, all men, are nothing. We deceive ourselves to think otherwise.
Are some wealthy? They possess nothing but that it was given them of God. They possess nothing they will take with them in death and they possess nothing in comparison to the wealth of God.
Are some famous? So what. Fame is no great thing. It has no merit or value. Fame is amoral. The most wicked man may be just as famous as the most generous.
Are some leaders? All power is of God and He turneth the heart of the king whithersoever He will.
Are some courageous?Set any brave act beside that of God, who loved men enough to condescend to be one of us then die for not some but all of us, and that while we were yet sinners (and opposed to God).
We are, all of us, nothing without Christ.

Galatians 5:14 (KJV) Don’t Load Them Down

Galatians 5:14 (KJV)
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
  • The Mosaic Law contains more than 600 regulations
  • The Ten Commandments are composed of, you guessed it, Ten Commandments
  • Jesus boiled them all into two greatest commandments
  • The Word of God here refines it to just one
Of course these narrower lists do not negate those previous. The broader list is contained within the narrower. For instance to fulfill the one law of Galatians five presupposes obedience to the first of two commandments given by our Lord Jesus Christ.
The nature of the faith is to concentrate truth to its basic core. We don’t intend to make things more difficult but to make the burden lighter. Wasn’t this the concern of the church in Acts fifteen?
Contrast this to:
  • the labor of the Jewish rabbis,
  • the rituals of the Roman Catholic Church or
  • the legislative work of the U.S. government
The laws in the United States just in the tax code number into the thousands and, it is admitted by those who work those codes, impossible to decipher consistently.
We don’t need to load people down with Christian rules and regulations. We just need to encourage them to love God with all their heart and soul. God will take care of all the rest.

Galatians 4:14-17 (KJV) Close In Spirit

Galatians 4:14-17 (KJV)
And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
When Paul was there, in the region of Galatia, while he was preaching and ministering to them and among them, they had great love and affection for him. They would have happily sacrificed to be a blessing and help to him.
Now Paul is gone in presence (though not in spirit). As memories of his ministry begin to fade so does the warmth of their affections. Then, to add ice to their gradual cooling, others have arrived who are not friends of Paul. What was once a tender relationship has become brittle and cracked.
This happens all too often. People who have been blessed by a ministry turn cold to the ministry through lack of contact and then turn against that ministry through other influences.
I praise God it doesn’t happen in every case. The church in Philippi, for instance, maintained a red-hot affection for Paul even after he had been gone many years. No one has to turn away because of distance and other influences. It’s a choice.
Choose to stay close to those who have helped you, if not in presence, by all means in spirit.

Jeremiah 28:12-13 (KJV) The Danger of Religion

Jeremiah 28:12-13 (KJV)
Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron.
This is the great danger of religion.
  • It looks good and sounds appealing.
  • It promises liberty and frees people of expectation.
  • It claims to break bondage and set captives free.
In reality it does only the opposite.
The trouble with religion, as with all systems that disavow or pay mere lip service to God’s Word, is that they are focused only on the present. They operate on the modern religious premise “Your Best Life Now. ” Their failure to view eternal things seriously condemns those who accept them into bondage far worse than anything this earth can imagine; hell and the Lake of Fire.

Galatians 2:19 (KJV) Dead to the Law

Galatians 2:19 (KJV)
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
The very law that Paul called Christians to die to, is the law that had taught Paul about that death.
  • It was through the law he learned his sin nature.
  • It was through the law that he learned the weakness of his flesh
  • It was through the law that he discovered the wretchedness of his old man and
  • It was through the law that he came to know the means of deliverance through Jesus.
Albert Barnes writes, “…by contemplating the true character of the Law of Moses itself; by considering its nature and design; by understanding the extent of its requisitions, he had become dead to it; that is, he had laid aside all expectations of being justified by it.”

Jeremiah 25:2-4 (KJV) We Are Not Alone

Jeremiah 25:2-4 (KJV)
The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened. And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear.
Jeremiah’s ministry was personal and independent.
  • God had called him Independently.
  • God had anointed him independently.
  • God had spoken to him independently.
But Jeremiah wasn’t alone.  Jeremiah was keenly aware that there were other prophets doing exactly as he was doing. He was independent but he was not alone.
The same can be said, for instance, of the New Testament apostles. The majority of Biblical information has to do with Paul.
  • His ministry was independent.
  • He was personally accountable for it.
But he too was not alone. While the Bible tells us little of the ministries of Peter, and next to nothing of the others, we know they were busy in the Lord’s work and they knew it (about each other) too.
The same is true of us. Each of us is independently accountable for our walk with Christ but we are not alone. Each pastor is independently responsible for his ministry but he isn’t the only preacher. Each church is independently accountable for the light they send to the world but we operate best when we are aware that others send that same light.
We are personally responsible, but we are not alone.
