2 Chronicles 28:23 (KJV) For One Act of Pride

2 Chronicles 28:23 (KJV)
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Uzziah was a good king except he presumed to do that which only the priests were allowed.[1]
For this presumption he was stricken with leprosy until his death.
His son, Jotham, did what was right except he refused to enter into temple of the Lord.
I have met many people who are good and honest and hard working, some who even claim to believe and to love the Lord but who refuse to faithfully worship God in the place He has ordained.
Jotham’s son, Ahaz went that step further and worshipped idols.
He made images of Baalim, he burnt child sacrifices in the valley of Hinnom and he sacrificed unto the gods of the kings of Syria and the Bible says, “they were the ruin of him and of all Israel.”
One act of pride, left unrepented, led to the ruin of a family and of the country.
[1]A sin reminiscent of that which King Saul committed. 1 Samuel 13:8-14 (KJV)
And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

2 Chronicles 26:16 (KJV) Just Serve God

2 Chronicles 26:16 (KJV)
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

That Uzziah was much loved and respected in his lifetime is undeniable. Isaiah 6:1
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon His throne, high and lifted and His train filled the temple.

Isaiah loved Uzziah so much that it was not until he died that Isaiah got his eyes fixed on the Lord.

The early days of his reign were no doubt good years for Judah. But the Bible says that then God made him strong. And when he became strong his heart was lifted up.

God does elevate certain people for various purposes of service. I don’t think a man should shrink from that, but neither ought he to seek it. The correct approach is merely to serve God with a faithful heart.
  • If He elevates us that is fine, so long as we do not get prideful of it.
  • If He does not that is fine as well, since it is not the thing we sought anyway.

2 Chronicles 24:22 (KJV) What A Better Man Would Do

2 Chronicles 24:22 (KJV)
Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.

Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, was a good, godly and faithful man. His death at the command of Joash was wicked and, in light of the actions of his father in saving Joash’s young life and raising and coaching him through his early years, is an unimaginable evil. Joash was alive because of Zechariah’s father. Joash was king because of Zechariah’s father.

Zechariah was right to have had as his last words, “The Lord look upon it, and require it.”

In a sense every Christian may trust that the Lord does look upon and require a retribution for evils committed against us.
2 Thessalonians 1:5-6
Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
But the Bible gives us another example to attain unto. Jesus looked upon those who, without cause, crucified Him and prayed,
Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Stephen attained this great heart when, as he was stoned to death, he prayed, Acts 7:60
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

We may know through faith that those who trouble us will be judged for it. But we don’t need to pray for it. A better man would pray for their salvation.

2 Chronicles 22:2 (KJV) God Knows What He Means

2 Chronicles 21:20 (KJV)
Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.

2 Chronicles 22:2 (KJV)
Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.

2 Kings 8 says Ahaziah was 22 years old when he began to reign. It would be impossible for him to have been 42 since his father died at age 40. Frankly, since the Bible says he was the youngest of his father’s children, 22 would even be a stretch.

Here is one of those places where critics claim we have a copier’s error. There are a few suggestions as to how to reconcile this. One is to claim he began to reign in the 42nd year of the dynasty of Omri[1] It is also possible to suggest that he “took over” in his father’s stead at age 22 but was not crowned king in his own right until 42. For what reason, I do not know.

In cases such as this I reserve the position that God knew what He meant and I may not fully comprehend it until I get to heaven. God’s Word, I am by faith sure of, has no errors.

2 Chronicles 20:33 (KJV) Whatever Else Is True…

2 Chronicles 20:33 (KJV)
Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
Joseph Benson’s commentary has this insightful statement concerning our passage, “…though they did worship the true God, yet would not be confined to the temple; but, for their own convenience, or from their affection to their ancient customs, chose to worship him in the high places.”
How often is it that we worship God but will not be confined to those things He teaches us in the Bible! I think I see it more often now than at any other time in my Christian life.
  • People who claim faith but reject church
  • People who claim faith but challenge doctrine
  • People who claim faith but question the Bible
  • People who claim faith but also embrace worldly philosophies
  • People who claim to be saved but also to be agnostics or even atheists
The Bible calls this out for what it is; they have not prepared their hearts unto the Lord.
Whatever else may be true of them, they do not have a heart for God.

Luke 17:1 (KJV) Offenses Happen

Luke 17:1 (KJV)
Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
I think we get this passage all wrong. We focus on what we should do about the offender when we ought to focus on not being him.
Offenses happen in this world. I am not excusing them. I am not making light of them. I merely accept what the Bible says about them. It is impossible to live without offenses coming our way:
  • In word
  • In action
  • Emotionally
  • Physically and
  • Spiritually
It is a fact, offenses will come.
But we do not have to be offended at the offenses. We can choose always to forgive. We can live in such a state of fellowship with God that the offenses are the furthest of our concerns.
I think the passage indicates what is of more concern is our propensity to be the offender. We are of such corrupt natures, so conformed to this world that, without taking proactive steps to prevent it, our response to an offense is offensive in itself.
It’s just better to give offenses to the Lord and live rather in a state of contentment.
  • God knows and
  • God has us covered

2 Chronicles 16:12 (KJV) How Much Better…

2 Chronicles 16:12 (KJV)
And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
Asa’s sin was not solely that he sought physicians instead of the Lord for his help. His sin is one of holding a grudge against God.
Asa had been a godly king and the nation had been blessed because of it. For decades they had been at peace under his reign. But finally Israel, tired of watching her citizens defect into the South, built the city of Ramah to prevent further defections. Asa sought the help of the Assyrians against Israel.
  • It was in this instance that he sought the help of man before the help of God.
  • It was here that he should have prayed first and acted later.
God sent to Asa a preacher to rebuke and correct him but rather than repent, Asa grew angry. He cast the preacher into prison and, in his sullen condition, went on with his life. Though the Bible doesn’t tell us much more, I can imagine that from this point on most every decision was founded on his grudge against God. We are informed he oppressed some of the people at this time.
The next and really last detail we have is of his death. He developed a disease in his feet that waxed exceeding great until it killed him.
  • Rather than seeking the help of the Lord
  • Rather than repenting and turning back to God
Asa died, perhaps surrounded by doctors, but with his face hardened against God.
How much better it is to confess our sin quickly! How much better to repent early and keep our heart tender toward God and those He loves!

Luke 15:3-4 (KJV) We Ought To Care

Luke 15:3-4 (KJV)
And he spake this parable unto them, saying,What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
I note that Luke chapter fourteen began with a very similar tone, Luke 14:5
And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
In both cases Jesus used an animal, and a man’s natural care of it, as a foundation for reason concerning our concern for people. Just as today when a person can get in more trouble for abusing a dog than for aborting a baby, people then were prone to care for their livestock better than one another.
  • It might be because we know animals can’t care for themselves without us
  • It might be that we have a corrupted tendency to worship the creature more than the Creator
Jesus did not condone or condemn this exceptional treatment of animals above people. What He did was to use what is true of us to point out what should be true of us.
  • If we would place the importance of an animal’s life above religious duty, ought we not do the same for people?
  • If we would drop everything to find a lost animal of our herd, should we not pour ourselves into reaching and recovering people who have gone astray?
We blame people over animals because people make choices that lead to their own destruction. Also people can only be helped if they choose to accept that help. Animals seem to be more helpless and are easier to contain. We feel a moral obligation toward the animal because it is an amoral being. Perhaps we have lost our sense of moral obligation to others because we know they are capable of moral actions.
However we want to spin this thing Jesus’ lesson to us is that we ought to care for people at least as much as we care for the beasts of the earth.

2 Chronicles 13:5-8 (KJV) God Uses All For Good

2 Chronicles 13:5-8 (KJV)
Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord. And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them. And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
2 Chronicles 13:16-18 (KJV)
And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand. And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men. Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.
Interestingly, Rehoboam was told not to fight Israel but his son Abijah could and did, with God’s help. I can only speculate a possible difference; Abijah could take up this battle for the sake of the Lord while Rehoboam would surely have fought out of personal revenge. Jeroboam did not make this battle easy and, if had not been for God’s intervention, it would have gone badly. As it turned out, this was a route for Judah. Jeroboam never recovered.
I am reminded of a more recent battle in the Middle East when our first President Bush took on Iraq. The United States and her allies absolutely routed Iraq’s elite Republican Guard but stopped short of conquering the country or capturing Saddam Hussein. It fell later to the second President Bush to retake the country. Hussein was finally captured and then hung. The second time cost more in money and lives and has not yet had a completely successful outcome.
I wonder why Abijah stopped short of reclaiming Israel for God? The passage does not say. He was not reproved for it but his country certainly has suffered because of it. In the end, many more of his brothers from the northern kingdom might have been spared if he had finished the work he set out to do.
One may wonder why men make the choices they do all day long. In the end we, who are believers, see that God uses all things for good.

2 Chronicles 11:4 (KJV) Don’t Fight It

2 Chronicles 11:4 (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
Rehoboam was legitimately upset. Jeroboam had led Israel in rebellion against the house of David. The animosity that had existed, almost since the moment God anointed David to replace King Saul, had reached its zenith.
  • Rehoboam was the rightful heir to David’s throne
  • David was the God ordained man to replace Saul
  • Jeroboam has rebelled, in the eyes of Rehoboam, not just against him, but against the order of God
But God had another word for Rehoboam. This thing was done of God. He was to let them go and not fight them because, though it was rebellion, it was done of God.
  • God never does an evil thing.
  • He does often allow things that are not righteous to happen and
  • He always uses them for His eventual glory.
In my circle the most obvious application concerns those leaving the church when I know they should not.
I should not fight them
Boy there is an impulse to do this. Still, it serves no good to do it. I would be much better off focusing on the people who stay than the ones who leave.
I do not have to join with them
Over the years many of Judah’s kings, including some of their best, attempted to cooperate, unite with or fellowship with those kings of Israel. It never went well.
I may expect God’s judgment against the rebellion
In God’s time and place He will recompense the evil of the one who turns against the Lord. While He will use the evil they do for a holy end it is not indication of His pleasure with the evil.
I doubt anyone likes to fight. But when bad happens it is much more difficult not to fight than to leave it in the hands of God to bring about His end.

Luke 12:33-34 (KJV) Everything Grows Old

Luke 12:33-34 (KJV)
Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
I was struck by that phrase, “bags which wax not old.”
Everything I have ever owned eventually got old.
I have had animals that have gotten old.
My favorite dog so far was Shred Row. I remember when my parents brought him home as a puppy. I was in 8th or maybe 9th grade. When I graduated High school Shed Row came with me. Circumstances involving the nature of a young man gaining an education dictated Shed Row had to go back to my parent’s house, where he eventually died. But we had some great times, Shed Row and me.
I bought a brand new Chevy short box pickup in 1978 and it got old.
It had less than twenty miles on it when I drove it off the lot at Salee Chevrolet in Milton-Freewater, OR. But things started breaking before it was out of warranty. I kept it for almost twenty years. When I sold it about all that was left was the drivetrain and cab.
Shall I go on? No matter the quality, no matter the nature, no matter the value. Everything on this earth waxes old.
Jesus must have meant something else. There must be a kind of treasure that is of another world; one where things are eternal.
That’s the bag I am after.

2 Chronicles 7:1 (KJV) The Fire From Heaven

2 Chronicles 7:1 (KJV)
Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house.
The Bible says that after Solomon’s prayer the fire came down from heaven. It was not just a fire but the fire.
Perhaps this heartens back to Leviticus 9:24
And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
This was “a fire” from the Lord. It was their first experience with it. By Solomon’s time, however, they were familiar with that fire that came from God.
  • It was not a man made fire
  • It was not a natural fire
This was the fire, the same fire they had known before.
  • God demonstrated it first In Leviticus 9.
  • David witnessed it at the altar in 1 Chronicles 21.
  • Elijah called it down in 1 Kings 18
The great need of our hour is the fire from heaven. We have seen churches aflame with an emotional fire stirred up by the hand of men. We have witnessed revivals of church attendance brought on by events such as great storms or terrible acts against our country. What we need most desperately is a revival directly from heaven. And I am sure, when we see it, we will know it.

To my readers:
First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.
