2 Samuel 11:2-4 (KJV) Give No Place

2 Samuel 11:2-4 (KJV)
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
Something in David clicked right here. This is a man dedicated to the things of God. He had devoted himself to:
  • Serving God in leadership
  • Worshipping God in heart and
  • Honoring God through his songs and psalms
And yet here we find all of that swept aside in fleshly desire and carnal action.
If David is capable of this, so are we all. The first lesson of this passage is that we must not allow our passions a place to surface.
  • We can’t rein them in
  • We can’t keep them in check
  • We can’t indulge them in moderation
We can but mortify them.
Any other action will result in the equivalent of David.

Revelation 18:2 (KJV) Come Out Of Her

Revelation 18:2 (KJV)
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Mystery Babylon is a good name for this place because it is a mystery where it is:
Some people believe it is the Babylon of Biblical times
This idea seems to be more plausible every day. The power of Islam, which stems from that part of the world, is growing rapidly and covering much of the earth.
Some people believe it is America
No doubt the reach of the United States is huge and is becoming less God honoring.
I am still of the persuasion, taught to me more than 35 years ago, that it is Rome
The universality of Roman Catholicism has little diminished. I can easily see her first compromising with and then swallowing up Islam
What I find interesting, in my visit with God today, is that this Babylon is said to be fallen when she is:
A habitation for devils
They abide in, have made their residence in Babylon
A hold of every foul spirit
It’s a temporary jail for them.
A cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
More than a jail, this is a prison of which they have no hope of escape.
God’s people are called to come out of her. Whatever chains the unclean and foul, it does not bind the believer. Still the believer must be called out.
There are no chains that the child of God cannot be free of. By God’s grace break those chains. Come out of this world and come near to God.

2 Samuel 8:6 (KJV) Harmony in the Middle East

2 Samuel 8:6 (KJV)
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
I never see the city of Damascus, whether in Biblical references or modern ones, without going in my mind to the conversion of Saul on the road to that city. Christianity did not begin there, but it sure took one giant step forward that day on the road to Damascus.
David didn’t conquer the Syrians as in enveloping their part of the world into Israel. He did what America does so often; he put troops there. The presence of those soldiers gave Israel strategic power over other threats. It also reminded the Syrians of their “relationship” with Israel. I doubt that it was friendly, but it was certainly cooperative.
Syria has always been one of the most ever present thorns in Israel’s side. Spiritually, philosophically and politically they are and always have been as different as two bodies of people could be.
But in Paul’s day these differences were muted by the mutual oversight of the Romans.
The only way there will ever be true harmony in the Middle East is for God to rule it all through Jesus Christ.

2 Samuel 5:6-8 (KJV) So Are The Lost

2 Samuel 5:6-8 (KJV)
And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.
The passage is not at all difficult to understand, neither is it derisive towards the handicapped (at least not on David’s part).
When David approached to conquer Jerusalem from the Jebusites, their retort was that even their blind and lame would defeat him. David’s response was to view all the Jebusites as blind and lame, incapable of standing in opposition to the will of God.
So are the lost today. They are: handicapped, crippled, even dead in trespasses and sin.
  • They cannot see the truth written plainly in God’s Word
  • They cannot hear God’s voice, calling His own to follow
  • They cannot sense the conviction of the Holy Spirit
  • They are incapable of knowing, doing or resisting God’s plan
And except that God quicken them, they will remain in this condition.
A doctor does not hate the patient dying of a dreadful disease but he does hate the disease that is killing the patient. He fights with every resource possible to slay the disease. The same could be said of the Christian. We do not hate anyone. We do, however, hate the condition that renders them helpless.

2 Samuel 3:27-29 (KJV) Killing

2 Samuel 3:27-29 (KJV)
And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
Not all killing is murder.
This chapter and the next illustrate the difference between those who take life in an act of war and those who commit a murder.
Abner killed Asahel in combat
Abner was not held accountable for it because it was in combat (Asahel would surely have slain Abner in the combat had he been able.) On the other hand, Joab killed Abner as an act of revenge and in a time of peace. Joan was to be blamed. Abner was not.
Next chapter two men killed Ishbosheth on his own bed
They were to be blamed. Abner, had he lived, would have delivered the kingdom of Ishbosheth to David. We do not know what would have become of Ishbosheth had Abner been successful. Abner, so far as David was concerned, acted honorably. The two men who killed Ishbosheth in his bed did not. They were summarily judged because of it.

2 Samuel 1:23 (KJV) We Do Not Have To Hate

2 Samuel 1:23 (KJV)
Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
David’s love for Jonathan makes sense. They were good friends. Jonathan would not allow his father’s jealousy to change that. I suppose David, as Jonathan had suggested, expected one day that Jonathan would stand beside him in his kingdom. He surely would not have guessed that he would die in battle alongside his father.
What is perhaps more surprising is David’s love for and grief at the death of Saul. He knew that something like this must someday happen but he did not relish the thought.
We do not have to hate anyone. We can disagree with them, even know that one day they will face the judgment of God for their wrong, and still love and honestly care for them.
God make it so.

1 Samuel 30:6 (KJV) Encouraged In The Lord

1 Samuel 30:6 (KJV)
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
David had been driven from his home by Saul and feared for his life from the same. Now:
  • His family had been captured
  • His stuff had been stolen and
  • His men blamed it all on him
No wonder he greatly distressed.
Yet with all that on his plate David encouraged himself in the Lord. How he did it we are not told but that he did it means we can too. I suspect he was encouraged:
  • By fellowship with God
  • By reflection on His promises and
  • By “manning up” because of God
And then he did something about it. He asked God for direction and pursued his problem.
If David could, we can.

Revelation 13:10 (KJV) Because We Believe The Bible

Revelation 13:10 (KJV)
He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
Faith in the promises of God leads to patience concerning the judgments of God. I am free to:
  • Forgive
  • Love and
  • Minister to
those who appear to be enemies because I believe in the judgment of God.
The reason a Christian is able to obey the Lord and
  • Love our enemies
  • Bless those that curse us
  • Do good to them that hate us and
  • Pray for those that despitefully use and persecute us[1]
is precisely because we believe the Bible.
Those promises of good, cheer and comfort us. Those promises of judgment upon the wicked free us from bitterness and open the door for unconditional love toward them.

1 Samuel 28:6 (KJV) How God Speaks

1 Samuel 28:6 (KJV)
And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
God spoke to people differently in the Old Testament era than He does today. Still, there is always a shadow of the New Testament truth in those Old Testament events. The Bible says God would not speak to him in any of the three most common ways of the time. Perhaps there is a New Testament truth that can be drawn from these shadows:
Dreams
This would be a direct personal and immediate revelation from God. It seems to be similar to our hearing the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. Every Christian has heard the voice of God in this manner. Oftentimes we ignore it or do not recognize it for what it is. A common error is to think of this as the supreme revelation of God. Given how easy it is to mistake it, it is really the last line of communication.
Urim
This speaks of the function of the priesthood. Dressed in his official garments, the High Priest bore the Urim and Thummim on his person. I think this might correspond to the Word of God. It is the official and recorded message from heaven. It is the most trustworthy communication as it is from God and never changes.
Still, mistakes can be made on the side of human interpretation. Just because we saw it in the Bible doesn’t mean we understood it correctly.
Prophet
The prophets were called of God “out of the congregation” if you will. These men were given a message from God to the people. It might correspond to our pastors and preachers. These men expound on God’s Word to us. We judge them correct when we determine they preach the Bible.
Saul, not having heard from God in the normal ways, forces his way past them to Samuel.
I wonder if this might not correspond to a believer who rushes to have someone tell him the will of God and doesn’t even attempt to hear from God in the prescribed ways?

1 Samuel 26:9 (KJV) I Met A Man Like David

1 Samuel 26:9 (KJV)
And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S anointed, and be guiltless?
Recently I spent a few days with a preacher friend of mine. We have known each other for two decades. I am sure we would both have called one another friends most of these years. But on this visit I learned some things about him I had never heard. I came away with huge admiration for his integrity and honor.
Some time later I read this passage of Scripture in my Daily Visit with God and was reminded of my friend and how similar his integrity is to David’s. I wrote this poem as a part of that Daily Visit with God.

I Met A Man Like David
I met a man like David
It was but days ago
A man in whom is honor
He is faithful, so you know
He served along another
For years, and did him good
And when ‘twas time for him to lead
His mentor to him withstood
But he kept his wits about him
He gave him praise and favor
Because to this man all his goal
Was to receive the Master’s savor
He has a burden carried long
I think it’s made him strong
He hasn’t asked that others bear
A burden, which to him belongs
He smiles and whistles and says, “God is good.”
And keeps himself real close
To Jesus Christ his Saviour
The One that he loves most
I do not think he is sin free
I know this could not be
But he has a heart that’s after God
And that is plain to see
I pray for God to bless him
And use him as His own
Fill his church with others
The fruit of His seed sown.

Revelation 11:7 (KJV) This Is War

Revelation 11:7 (KJV)
And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
I am intrigued by the word, war, in this passage. These two are not merely targeted murdered, killed, slain. The Bible says that the beast will make war against them.
Merriam- Webster’s Online Dictionary defines war as,
“(1) a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations
(2) : a period of such armed conflict
(3) : state of war”
It is aggressive, armed and between nations. The Beast’s conflict is not against these two but the nation for which they stand.
And so it is with any hostility a Christian experiences for his faith. It isn’t personally against them, but rather against God and the nation of which He has made us citizens.

1 Samuel 24:12 (KJV) Better To Love

1 Samuel 24:12 (KJV)
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
David appeared to have the opportunity to avenge himself of the evil he had endured under Saul. He even had people urging him to do it. David chose instead to leave the vengeance to God.
Looking at the account historically we know that God did avenge David. We also know that it was difficult for David to keep unity in Israel as it was. It would have been that much harder had he given the followers of Saul a reason to be bitter.
It is always better to love people. If they have cause to be judged, God will surely address that on His own.

Revelation 9:4 (KJV) Satan Is A Faker

Revelation 9:4 (KJV)
And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
We will discover later in the Revelation, that the devil, in imitation of God, also has a mark for his followers. We will discover too that the devil will attack those who do not have his mark (in contra-distinction of God, who simply withheld divine protection from His marked.)
Satan is an imitator. He desires what God has so, to the best of his ability he copies what God does. He just never gets it quite right. He has:
  • False Christs
  • False teachers
  • False believers
  • False churches with
  • False Bibles
He exaggerates his imitation of the work of God to make it appear he has outdone God.
In the end we find that it is, for him and his followers, a losing proposition.

Revelation 8:1 (KJV) Time, Timeless in Heaven

Revelation 8:1 (KJV)
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
It seems to me there is a blending of heaven and earth in this verse.
One the one hand, there is no time in heaven
Perhaps one could argue that eternity had not yet begun so time still exists because it exists on earth. That is sort of my point. Heaven only relates to time, as it exists on earth.
On the other hand, the writer still sees according to what he knows
He knows time. He has no tools with which to communicate except those he has received on earth. God’s Spirit gives him his words, but he must communicate them with what he has in common with the earthly.

Time, timeless in heaven, must pass very quickly
What is a half an hour measured next to eternity?
Time, contrasted to judgment must seem like an eternity
In my cowboyin’ days, every time I sat on a bull, time seemed to stop the moment I called for the chute. The few times I made it to the eight second whistle always seemed like forever. Imagine how long a half hour of silence must seem in heaven!
Heaven is obviously not a silent place. Silence was meant to mark something. That something is the coming of Jesus Christ to reign over the earth. When heaven comes to earth it will be but a blip in the eternal radar. The saints will rejoice at the victory of Christ over His enemies. But it will seem as if it never ends to those enemies of God. The judgment, as Cain declared, is greater than they can bear.
I plead with all to be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ today.

1 Samuel 18:1-2 (KJV) We Get What We Ask For

1 Samuel 18:1-2 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
Samuel had warned Israel this would happen. Jesse was an elderly man, and an honored one. David was his youngest son. He would have cherished him as such. David was also helpful to Jesse. He not only tended the sheep but did so in such a faithful manner Jesse couldn’t have helped but be dependent upon him.
But Saul wanted David.
  • His music soothed the sullen king
  • His success in combat left the king secure
  • His own son, Jonathan, found in David a kindred spirit
And David was never allowed to return home again.
Sometimes we get what we ask for but have a lot of trouble living with what we get.
